We moved here for clean air and safe streets — not a 60-metre smokestack

We’re standing together to protect our air, water, and community from a 750,000-tonne waste-burning plant proposed for Sunbury/Bulla.

HiQ is proposing to build a massive waste incinerator at 570 Sunbury Road, Bulla, that would burn up to 750,000 tonnes of rubbish every year—around 15 times more than the entire Hume region produces.

If approved, it would run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the next 30 years. This would happen right beside our homes, schools, creeks and lock our community into decades of waste burning.

The proposed plant would include a 60-metre smokestack, the release of fine particles and “forever chemicals” (PFAS) that can persist in air, soil, and water, and consume about 180,000 litres of water every day.

For every four tonnes burned, one tonne of toxic ash remains that would most likely be dumped on site within our community.

OUR HOME, OUR FUTURE

Sunbury and Bulla are growing communities — full of families, new housing estates, schools, and small businesses.

We chose to live here for clean air, open space, and a sense of community.

The proposed HiQ incinerator would change that forever. It’s not just about a building.

it’s about the health, safety, and future of our families.

A residential neighborhood with single-family homes, trees, and a wide street, with industrial chimneys in the background emitting smoke during sunset.

what it means for families and homeowners

Homes near large industrial projects often lose value and become harder to sell. Buyers are wary of noise, pollution, and risk.

Once the smokestack goes up, it doesn’t come down, even if you want to move away.

🏡 Property Values declining

Waste incinerators lock councils into 25–30-year contracts. Ratepayers end up footing the bill for new roads, monitoring, and maintenance.

More trucks and waste mean higher local costs and pressure on council budgets.

💰 Hidden Local Costs

The plant would use around 180,000 litres of drinking water every day — even during droughts when residents are asked to conserve.

💧 Water Use in a Dry Region

Incinerators release fine particles, toxic gases, and PFAS — “forever chemicals” that survive burning and settle in the environment.

Children, the elderly, and those with asthma are most at risk.

The Facts

SUNBURY IS NOT MELBOURNE’S DUMPING GROUND

Hume produces only a fraction of the waste this plant plans to burn — the rest would be trucked in from all over Victoria, day and night.

Our community shouldn’t become the state’s dumping ground.

We already do our part to recycle and reduce waste. We deserve clean air, not a smokestack on the horizon.

A CLEANER, FAIRER FUTURE

Expanding local FOGO (Food Organics & Garden Organics) and recycling programs is cheaper, cleaner, and keeps jobs in our community.

♻️ Recycle & Compost

👷‍♀️ Create Local Jobs

Circular-economy industries — repairing, reusing, and recycling — create far more employment than incineration ever could.

Solar, wind, and battery storage already power homes safely and sustainably — no burning required.

TAKE ACTION

Once built, it can’t be undone.

Let’s protect Sunbury’s air, water, and future together.
